Sometimes, in order to make progress, one must take a step backward. Or three. This past week was mostly one of remediation.
First up was the reconstruction of one of the soffits in the Music Room. If you look very, very closely at this image, you might see the problem (hint, its not lens distortion–the mortar joints are straight and true):

Two months ago, the completion of the Music Room Cloud gave me the opportunity to take a step back from basic progress reports and to talk more broadly about the aesthetics and architecture of the project, in particular the way that large features of the studio design fit together into an integrated whole. That was a very popular post, and it circulated widely among designers and architects, geometers and algebraic topologists, as well as studio cats and studio rats. Now it is time to focus on the other jewel of the main studio, the Control Room, and the way that smaller features fit together into an equally integrated whole.
Front and center is one of the hallmarks of Wes Lachot’s RFZ design, a hybridization of wall and ceiling that Wes calls a Walling:

With Booth B’s wood trim being finished last week, it’s probably no surprise that this week we finished the wood trim for Booth A:
It looks gorgeous, but because it is wood, it looks different from every angle:
As usual, it is difficult to pick a title for this blog entry because so many milestones are being reached across the project, but I chose to begin with the progress in Booth B because it is such a logical successor to last week’s posting about the Control Room Wood Trim. But now that it’s mostly done, it should be obvious why this must follow that:

Started in earnest last week, the floor of the Music Room remains this week’s major production. And indeed, progress is looking good:

The installation of the wood floor in the Music Room is now in full swing, for real this time. Here are three perspectives of first twelve diamonds:
Despite the awful spectrum of the mercury-vapor work lamp, these images do show how the wood appears to change color as one moves around the room. It should be even more dramatic once the wood is finished.

This week our door installation team hung 12 more IAC doors, all in the Main building. In this photo you can see 9 of them (if you know what to look for):
That’s one and a half tons of hardware that moves with effortless precision. Let’s rewind a bit to see how we got here (and to see what else was accomplished)…
We are still hoping to “open our doors” by the end of the year, and to do so we really need two things to happen:
Early Monday morning, and right on schedule, a truck pulled up to the site carrying 12,000 pounds of hardware and packaging from the Industrial Acoustics Company. This directly addresses item #1, but it also critically enables item #2, because we have a lot of work to do before we are even ready to begin the console commissioning process. Nevertheless, we do have a schedule that works if everybody delivers according to plan, and IAC did their part to initiate our 6-week sprint with an excellent start:
This week was mostly progress on smaller things, which is sometimes needed so that bigger things can get done. With our spiffy new cloud in the Music Room, we put up the finishing touch of some LED rope lights:
